Input Vs. Output Vs. Outcome Goals

Source: readdle-spark://bl=QTpta2hhdHRhckBiZXJrZWxleS5lZHU7SUQ6djh1NzdxcTlxNHRyaHh2MnZnZXR3%0D%0AQGNvbnZlcnRraXQtbWFpbDIuY29tO2dJRDoxNzM5MjczMzgzNjIwNzkxNDc5OzMy%0D%0AMjQwNTk4NDU%3D

There are three main types of goals:

  1. Input goals: These goals are about you committing to putting in a certain amount of X towards something. (e.g., I will take 20 minutes to try to write up a blog post). It’s okay if you don’t end up spending the time on this — all that matters is the input.
    • These goals give you complete control over success and failure.
  2. Output goals: These goals are about measurable results. What tasks can you complete that will get you closer to your long-term goals? (e.g., film 1 YouTube video per week, walk 8000 steps daily, etc.)
  3. Outcome goals: These are the outcomes we want. Being honest about your outcome goals can be pretty daunting.

Which goal to go with depends on your motivation level. If things feel stuck on autopilot, you can give yourself some ambitious output/outcome goals. On the other hand, if you feel you’re getting discouraged by an ambitious outcome goal, you should try to move closer to the control end of the spectrum — input goals.

I want to become someone who finishes meaningful things each day

Source: https://durmonski.com/self-improvement/identity-based-habits/?ref=refind

I want to make finishing things for work (and then writing about / reflecting on exactly what I did) part of my identity. This is who I am. It’s not a habit that I have.

I also need to have the systems in place that let me do this effectively. What are those systems?

  1. A better way than Things of keeping track what I worked on each day.
  2. A better way than Rescuetime for determining exactly how much time I spent on what each day. (Not sure if this is necessary).
  3. Having a better journaling system, so that I’m very aware of what I’m spending time on each day and where the time is going.
  4. Having the determination to spend time after work to make sure that the stuff that needs to get done, gets done. It doesn’t necessarily mean I have a bad work-life balance. It just means that when I know I need to get stuff done, I get it done, without compromising on other things.

Make Every Minute Count

People making things — entrepreneurs, artists, writers, musicians, comedians, sculptors, furniture crafters, potters, knitters, gardeners, video-game designers, YouTube creators, podcasters — must utilize these minutes more effectively, because unless you have a patron or a trust fund, you’ll probably need to carve out time among life’s many other demands in order to pursue your creative passions. At least for a while.

Most creative people are holding down another job (or two or three) while waiting for their passions to pay off. The tragedy is that creative people (and people who dream of being creative) often use their time less effectively than most, and more often than not, they spend their lives waiting for the right moment instead of making the time.

The trick is to utilize your time effectively. To value every minute of the day equally, regardless of how many other minutes are attached to it. Once you have chosen to value every minute, you can begin to create systems by which those precious minutes can be used.

# making friends on the internet

source: https://ift.tt/NtcnqlG tags: #literature #relationships uid: 202207132045

This is related to how a lot of people suggest using twitter 202207101701

follow people you resonate with. This is anyone doing things in the world aligned with the world you’d like to see. Start with searching up your favorite podcast hosts (and guests!), authors, YouTubers, artists, event hosts, comedians, professors, and journalists.

Though these accounts are likely not going to be the people you’ll be lunching with right away, the people responding to them just might be.

ask questions, offer suggestions, share learnings. Be yourself! Share the things that excite you the most. Post things you are confused by, and answer them if you figure it out. There is no right or wrong here, so follow your curiosity and be open.

I should use Twitter as a place where I can begin to contribute in the public sphere. 202208262111

send that dm / email / offer to connect. Sure, some won’t get replies. Some might even react negatively. But the vast majority of people on the internet respond kindly to someone showing genuine interest. The more specific you can be, the better. Something like:

Hey {name}, I’ve enjoyed following your account for a few months and found {specific post / general idea} particularly interesting. I’d love to chat further sometime about {specific question / idea / topic} - let me know if you’re interested and have some time soon!”

Things That Depend On My Dropbox File Path

So much of my online workflows depend on Dropbox! A recent software update changed the location of my Dropbox directory, which promptly caused a lot of my extensions to break. Documenting exactly which ones broke in case something like this happens again in the future.

  • Alfred preferences sync
  • The Archive (Zettel) directory
  • Alfred:
    • In the zettelkasten workflow:
      • Cmd + Shift + O — create new Zettel ()
      • ztags — Populate the [[TAGS COMPENDIUM]] file
      • ,# — Tags search bash script
      • work — Make a work journal page (although I’ll stop using this soon I think)
      • personal — Make a personal journal page (likewise, will probably stop using this soon)
      • sd — State dump
      • psd — Personal state dump
    • In the Zettel Search workflow:
      • zf , zz, zx — ugh. This isn’t working because of some stupid file indexing thing. I don’t really know how to fix this, and I really with I didn’t sign up for this Dropbox thing. I’m so mad.

#update 07-13-22 6:53 PM: I disabled the beta experience because of the thing it broke above ^, and changed everything back to the way it was.

202207110133 using things 3 as a fancy database

ideas:

  • the things UI is not intelligent.
  • if I want to do things like automatically surface stale todos or return some kind of logbook reflection mechanism (that automatically sends the tasks I did to my journal or something), that could be possible. it’s just not easy to do, but I could do it.
  • things logbook sucks as well.
  • the dilemma is that any additional add-on will not be as clean as the things UI itself, and will add friction (unless it’s completely automated, which is hard because things is a local app)
  • the ideal situation is basically impossible. have to figure out how to get the best of a somewhat shitty situation.
  • alternatively, could use something like todoist, but it just didn’t feel as good. I haven’t found better alternatives for Todo apps yet.
