Things On My Mind (writing this from home, after a weekend of not doing too much)
- it’s so fucking satisfying to hold command-W and close a bunch of tabs at once.
- coming home is an exercise in self-restraint for me. So far, I’ve failed it — I’ve been masturbating constantly, chewing my nails/fingers, haven’t done any real physical exercise, haven’t read or otherwise done any of the productive things that I said I would do (apart from watching breaking bad) and in general (apart from the social moments) have mostly wasted my weekend away.
- what are the things that I do want to do in order to fix my week here? 202208290310
- find something that I’m consistently doing for several hours each day. this could be breaking bad, but ideally it would be a more physically involved hobby 202208232011
- write regularly! I have absolutely no excuse to not write regularly.
- Work hard. It’s not going to be easy to do work here, but I also have everything available to me to make sure that I’m focused and doing good work. I have food readily accessible, my mom’s desk space, I can go outside and get some fresh air and sunshine any time I want. I have nothing else to do, no distractions, no other responsibilities. It’s time to execute.

- add tasks to the tracker.
- publish the Keunwoo PRs. 202208291247
- publish the Jayden PRs.
- talk to Ian about permanent deletion.

Hobbies Vs. Interests
When you are thinking about choosing a hobby, it’s important that you don’t confuse having an “interest” with having a “hobby.”
Interests: Interests typically are the desire to learn about something. An interest can spawn from natural curiosity, professional goals or family experiences. For instance, you may have an interest in learning more about hockey or volleyball because your children are involved in those sports. Or you may love reading books on behavior to help you achieve career goals. But unlike hobbies, an interest requires only intellectual action (to learn about something) and doesn’t require physical action.
Hobby: A hobby is usually defined as any enjoyable leisure activity that we engage in voluntarily and consistently when we are free from the demands of work or other responsibilities. A hobby may be inspired by an interest, but it typically requires more commitment and involves taking action, like learning a new skill, or collecting, building or creating something. Hobbies are essentially the active pursuit of a personal interest.
Manan’s note: I’m interested in a lot of things, but I don’t have as many hobbies. I feel like if I had more hobbies, I would be less distracted during work hours because I would know that I have fun things to spend my energy on outside of work.

#statedump 3:54 PM: verified that shard assignments don’t cause crashes on the existing list of crud requests. Need to verify that:
- Forcing web servers to clear the worker assignment cache will make it so that web servers have actually have to query the shard assignments table.
- Figure out which crud requests need to be made resilient that currently aren’t. 202208171607
Also talk to Keunwoo about 202208180800 — types of CRUD requests. Should we try to handle certain ones over others? There’s a lot of page bundle ones. Should we address those first?
Another thing to ask Keunwoo — the list of callsites isn’t complete (I think.) There are some callsites that depend on only certain CRUD requests, and we haven’t enumerated all the crud requests.
Another thing to ask Keunwoo — Some callsites don’t seem like they’re strictly necessary to serve CRUD requests. Should we only focus on those?
E.g., this one: out of sync application reconciler is marked must work, but is it really?
Hopscotch - How To Manage Your Todo List
Apparently, the Eisenhower matrix (Urgent / not urgent, important / not important) doesn’t actually work that well. Here’s an alternative, which I’ve implemented in Things:
- MT (Must “handle” today)
- ML (Must “handle” later — when you encounter this, either make some progress on it today, or schedule it for an upcoming day.)
- ST (Should “handle” today. It’s important to get to MLs before STs, because if you do STs today, you might not get to the MLs on your list. And if this happens day after day, MLs will be procrastinated indefinitely.)
- SL (Should “handle” later).
- CT (Could “handle” today. For the same reason mentioned above, SL is higher priority than the CTs of the world.)
After I’ve gone through and organized all my tasks using this categorization, use the following criteria to reorder the tasks (if necessary):
- If it’s at a fixed time (e.g. a scheduled meeting/call), or must be done after something else (e.g. awaiting approval), move it to about where in the order you expect to do it.
- Put related tasks together to increase efficiency, e.g. ones from the same project or in the same location. If you Must go to the dentist, you may as well buy some milk nearby to save a separate trip, even if that’s just a Should. (But think twice about moving Coulds earlier.)
- Move a quick ST task earlier if it’s best done ASAP. E.g. by sending a one-line email first thing, so the recipient can work on it today.
- All that said, if your Must Todays might take all day, don’t do anything else until they’re finished.

High Experience
- Felt like I was on a battlefield, or the main character of some epic saga, wading my way through the crowd
- My brain felt like it could only focus on one thing at once, but whatever it was focusing on, I felt super focused on it.
- In general, my brain felt like it was working a bit slow.
- Rocco’s ice cream taco tasted insanely good.
- In the festival environment, there was just an insane amount of stimulus — sounds, smells, sights. This tripped me out a bit but was also a really cool experience because it felt like I could experience these senses way better.
- I felt a bit paranoid about the fact that I was high. I was worried that everyone would be able to tell.
- I repeatedly felt like I had to “ground” myself to bring myself back to reality. However, it was one of those things that if you don’t think about it, you’ll just revert back to the default, which was the high state, so I had to keep thinking about it to bring myself to reality.
- I’m very curious what my experience would’ve been like if I wasn’t high, especially on Saturday when there was just so fucking much going on (stampeded after Jack Harlow, waiting for ice cream, Polo & Pan already being super trippy / vibe)
