Input Vs. Output Vs. Outcome Goals

There are three main types of goals:
- Input goals: These goals are about you committing to putting in a certain amount of X towards something. (e.g., I will take 20 minutes to try to write up a blog post). It’s okay if you don’t end up spending the time on this — all that matters is the input.
- These goals give you complete control over success and failure.
- Output goals: These goals are about measurable results. What tasks can you complete that will get you closer to your long-term goals? (e.g., film 1 YouTube video per week, walk 8000 steps daily, etc.)
- Outcome goals: These are the outcomes we want. Being honest about your outcome goals can be pretty daunting.
Which goal to go with depends on your motivation level. If things feel stuck on autopilot, you can give yourself some ambitious output/outcome goals. On the other hand, if you feel you’re getting discouraged by an ambitious outcome goal, you should try to move closer to the control end of the spectrum — input goals.
