Ummm so today got up super late because I slept super late. Afterwards, Mulan left at some point. Honestly kind of in a daze because I wrote my journal entries for the previous two days today and I just thought about a lot of things including meetup.com, the Big Cheese, going to Abbey (pub), talking to my parents.
- Something that I realized while I was talking to my parents — I need to figure out what my way of interacting and finding new people to talk to will be. Some people go ham trying to do certain things, and I don’t have to do that, but I still have to find my niche, figure out how to deal with the cultural barrier and the degrees of separation that come with being a foreign student and still getting my bearing with things, and still saving time for myself and Mulan and establishing a good connection with the people that I care about.
- Also dealing with this issue of being late — I’ll just consider it my goal to go to things 10 minutes early instead of 10 minutes late. I’ll just think of it like that, and go from there!
- Yeah initially was going to go out to the pub, but I think I’ll meet with some Sciennes people right now, might go to the Big Cheese afterwards or a pub, but yeah definitely want to meet with these Sciennes people!
UPDATE: I ended up going to the Sciennes event! I met a lot of new people, including Philip, Iona, Martim, Lorenzo, Jath, and more. I also went to the Big Cheese, which was interesting. I got to learn a lot about European culture — it seemed like it was much more interesting hanging out with international people from Europe or non-American countries than Americans. They have a laid back lifestyle — things don’t really seem like a rat race for them. They’re also exposed to alcohol, drinking, smoking etc from a very young age — Martim told a story about how he went out with some of his friends, camping inside his city itself, for 3 days just drinking when he was 14. Interesting to hear some of the perspectives. Had a good conversation with Martim afterwards about some of these ideas as well. Had an argument with @mulan where I was talking about drinking (not complaining about people drinking, just making some observations about how integrated drinking was into the lifestyles of a lot of the European people I met) and Mulan got annoyed unnecessarily. 1-2 days later though, she admitted that she had no real reason to get annoyed and everything was fine.
