One of the key findings that comes up again and again is known as the 5-hour rule.” In short, this is the rule where we spend one hour a day learning, reflecting, and thinking. The rule dates to Benjamin Franklin, who would devote (at least) an hour each day specifically to learning something new. Franklin would rise early to read and write. He even set up his own club of artisans and experimenters. Today, Elon Musk, Oprah Winfrey, and Bill Gates all employ some version of the 5-hour rule.

I’m going to document what I learned as part of the 5-hour rule each day.

#update 10-03-22: I’ve had trouble applying the 5-hour rule consistently. It’s hard to find the time in the day to dedicate to this. Too often what ends up happening is that

Friendly Ambitious Nerd

Structureless thoughts

  • Visa seems to think that making friends is so important. I generally agree. And yet, I’m not actively trying to make new friends. Why? Should I be consulting Books on making conversations 202204171820 more?
  • Give people specific compliments. This is something that I’ve specifically noticed (and appreciated) whenever people around do.
  • The longer a relationship lasts, the likelier it is that you’ll step on each other’s toes in recognizably repetitive patterns. The longer this goes on, the more hollow of an excuse I wasn’t thinking” becomes. It thus becomes necessary to become more considerate.

3-5 Things I Want To Do Today

  1. Finish all the tasks that I’ve outlined in Journaling 202205030111
  2. Clean up the Git tree. At least separate out the things that belong in the query strategy PR (which is the legacy accessor addition). Just had a thought about how I can potentially avoid this cleanup in the future 202205030149
  3. Look at the crasher that Jayden mentioned, and come up with a solution.
  4. Make very rough outline for RFC about new grad sessions, and get feedback from Fred.

Anti Todo List

  • Toured the dogpatch apartment again, and filed an application
  • Talked to dadu/dadi
  • Hung out with Saharsh
  • Got pizza at this cool place
  • Started talking slower and more consciously, and realized this makes a big difference in how composed I sound when I talk. 202212291306

Big-Tech Interview Prep

  • It’s a match-making process — companies are trying to see if you fit their business needs.
    • You also need to figure out whether it fits your needs.
  • Don’t try to game the system.
    • If you end up in the company, you have to explain it on your resume, and if you don’t have much to talk about, that’s going to be awkward / kind of problematic for the rest of your career.
  • Hiring a bad engineer is really bad.
    • Hiring someone who gamed the system sucks.
    • It takes away time that managers could give to other people.
    • Then you get micromanaged (they document issues with your performance)

The right way to prep

  • Consider your resume, and think about what the company can provide to you in terms of goals that you haven’t already seen before.
