  • things to change with the timing augmented accessor:
    • name needs to come from nameForTesting (and needs to be renamed)
    • change the numApplicationIds to some power of two thing
    • make it frequency capped?
    • add the timing augmented accessor to other callsites (mapAsync)
  • things to do for web shard assignments rollout
    • find missing web callsites.
  • add note to application shard assignments table indicating that it’s deprecated. People should use the shardassignmentaccessor instead.

# Bayes’ rule: Log-odds form

source: https://ift.tt/nOa08xA tags: #literature uid: 202212101127 — Context: bayes theorem 202212092211

The Weber-Fechner law says that most human sensory perceptions are logarithmic, in the sense that a factor-of-2 intensity change feels like around the same amount of increase no matter where you are on the scale. Doubling the physical intensity of a sound feels to a human like around the same amount of change in that sound whether the initial sound was 40 decibels or 60 decibels. That’s why there’s an exponential decibel scale of sound intensities in the first place!

Thus the log-odds form should be, in a certain sense, the most intuitive variant of Bayes’ rule to use: Just add the evidence-strength to the belief-strength! If you can make your feelings of evidence-strength and belief-strength be proportional to the logarithms of ratios, that is.

Airtable Layoffs

I feel so sad. It feels like so many people didn’t get a chance, especially the new grads. Things feel so ruthless. People I need to reach out to 202212081226

Note about layoffs:

If you ever get laid off, you should IMMEDIATELY file for unemployment benefits with your state. I did when it happened to me 14 years ago and the benefit covered my mortgage at that time.
If you were laid off a few weeks ago then you've missed out on the benefits for those weeks but you can still file right now.
Think of unemployment as a benefit that your (former) employer paid for but is administered by the state... it's not that different than your health insurance benefit, except it only becomes active when you are laid off.

There is no stigma in collecting this benefit... it exists for a reason.
